Artificial muscle

Artificial muscle two scientists at the University of California in the us have developed a molecule that acts as an artificial muscle. They have synthesised a bio-molecule that, they claim, has the property to react to an electrical impulse by changing shape. The applications of such a molecule could be widespread; from replacement of diseased muscles in the body to fabrication of micromachines.

Existing muscles in robots are either made up of mechanical devices or consist of piezoelectric materials that are also used in quartz watches. The materials change their form in response to electrical fields. The molecule developed recently is different in that each individual molecule behaves like a muscle.
