AT ODDS

There are two areas which could create differences among Ger- many's coalition partners -the Social Democratic Party and the Green Party.

Petrol prices: The Greens have called for a tripling of the gasoline prices (to US $3 per litre) to cut down on the carbon emissions. The revenue from what the Greens call "ecology tax" will stimulate economic growth by forcing indus- tries to develop energy-efficient products, they argue. This will also help reduce welfare costs. In tune with the Green demand, the government has agreed to a total of US $22 billion to be added to the price of petrol, gas, heating oil and electricity from January 1999.

Nuclear power: The SPD has pledged to stop relying on power from nuclear power plants ':s soon as possible" but the Greens have called for an immediate closure of all nuclear power stations.
