Jack Shroder, a geologist at the University of Nebraska and co-organiser of the May 29-31 workshop in Lahore, was informed that the conference had been postponed "due to unavoidable circumstances'. Shroder was organising the meet jointly with Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (hec). The Pakistan interior ministry had allegedly pressured hec to defer the conference in which about 100 scientists from eight countries were to participate.

Syed Hasnain, a glaciologist and vice-chancellor of the University of Calicut, Kerala, suggested convening the meet in a neutral place.
