Silent polluter
pockets of oil can survive for more than 30 years after an oilspill and may pollute the environment for an indefinite time. This finding comes from a study of the aftermath of a mishap, which occurred in Buzzards bay, usa, on a foggy morning in September 1969. Prestige, a Boston-bound barge, while entering Cape Cod canal ran aground on rocks, spilling 700,000 litres of diesel into the bay (right in the backyard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution).
The incident was not large by oilspill standards
