• 295 distilleries in India with an installed capacity to produce 27 lakh kilolitres (kl) of alcohol per annum
• Amount of spent wash generated per litre of alcohol: 15-20 litres on an average
• In 2001-02, 15.1 lakh kl of alcohol was produced in the country.
• Which translates into 264 lakh kl of spent wash, with a pollution load of 13.2 lakh tonnes of BOD and 33 lakh tones of COD
