Consumer power

  • 14/05/2004

Governments and powerful business groups might want a harmless WHO strategy, but consumer groups around the world won't let them have their way. As many as 250 consumer organisations from 115 countries gathered at Lisbon from October 13-17, 2003 for the Consumers International's 17th World Congress. The organisations, which together form the Consumers International, decided that they would wholeheartedly support WHO's global strategy. "We are convinced that there is a great need to influence the governments and ask them to take a strong position at WHA,' says a member of Consumers International. With the strategy in place, the focus would be on education and information dissemination on safe food and nutrition. Through these efforts it would be ensured that healthy choices are given to the consumers, he says. Policies on taxes would have to be formulated and the income generated through this can be used for creating awareness. Farmers would be encouraged to grow healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.
