RIVER CONTAMINATION
River Swat of Pakistan has been contaminated to such an extent that its waters are now unfit for drinking or for irrigation purposes. The North West Frontier Province government had formed a River Protection Cell in 1994 to protect Swat. But the cell has failed to achieve its objectives. Officials are turning a blind eye to sewage being dumped into the river both by residential as well as by commercial complexes. Even the employees of the municipal committee of Mingora, a tourist resort, are disposing off their garbage into the river.
