Image conscious Goa
Picturesque Goa does not wish to lose its money-spinning charm as a tourist haven. The state government has issued a notice, under section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, banning the sale and use of plastic bags and bottles on beaches and in wildlife sanctuaries. The ban comes into effect from October 2. As per the directions to the chief conservator of forests, the use and sale of such plastic products within the notified boundaries of the wildlife sanctuaries of Cotigao, Mahavir and Bondla have been prohibited. Similar orders have also been issued to the director of tourism and the chief officer of Panjim Municipal Council, clamping such a restriction within Miramar and Caranzalem beaches. Violation of the ban will invite immediate action under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. The state government is working with companies to recycle plastic bottles.
