New goat

New goat An ungulate species belonging to an entirely new genus has been identified in Vietnam and Cambodia's northwestern districts (BBC Wildlife, Vol 13, No 1).

German biologist Wolfgang Peter from the Zoological Gardens of Mun-ster found a pair of black horns - 45 cm long, twisted to the side with regular corrugations fading out at the back - belonging to an animal of this species in a market stall in Ho Chi Minh City. After comparing the horns with those of known species, scientists have concluded that they belong to a new species, now named Pseudonovibos spiralis, for which the common name in Vietnam is linh duong (mountain goat).
