Many plans, no vision

DELHI: Bus route rationalisation; bus priority lanes; introduction of high capacity buses; electric trolley buses; trams for the walled city; feeder bus service for the metro; increasing parking facilities; rationalisation of parking charges; improvement of traffic signalling systems; road widening; cycle tracks on selected corridors and many others.

MUMBAI: Mumbai Urban Transportation Project (MUTP): expansion of suburban rail capacity and its service frequency; increases in the capacity; efficiency and safety of the road network; better facilities for pedestrians; improvements to the operating efficiency and quality of bus services; and reductions in motor vehicle emission levels. It will also strengthen institutional capacity; 19,500 poor households to be resettled satisfactorily from hazardous slum/squatter areas to permanent housing with improved living conditions.

BANGALORE: High capacity buses on dedicated lanes; metro rail; increasing number of flyovers; widening roads; introduction of one ways; prohibiting certain types of vehicles like heavy-duty vehicles and autorickshaws on certain roads and prohibition of parking; enhanced enforcement of traffic laws through automation.

HYDERABAD: Rejuvenation of the suburban railway network; building flyovers; re-routing buses.

KOLKATA: Introduction of modern tramways; electric trolley buses and extension of the existing 16.45-km long metro rail.

LUCKNOW AND KANPUR: Lucknow plans for a light rail system of about 27 km, rail corridor of 20 km and inland water transportation of 10 km. Kanpur plans for two rail corridors and a dedicated busway of 19.6 km. goa: Skybus system
