VIETNAM

VIETNAM Given the pace of development and the concurrent c1cstructionofforests in Vietnam, the Indochina tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) could well be on the path of extinction. The dwindling numbers of these tigers could be attributed to con- tinned hunting, poaching and destruction of Vietnam's already denuded forests. Ali additional threat to the species is the heavy clernand for various parts of the tiger made by traditional Chinese medicine. 'I lie Indochina tiger is one of the most endangered of the five remaining sub-species. Wildlife experts have warned that there are less than 100 of these tigers left ill Vietnam .and only an estimated 1,500 of their, are to be found in the jungles of I aos, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma. According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), one tiger it week is killed in these regions. WWF officials in the US are chalking out a strategy to save the Indochina tiger by collating information on the animal.
