Battling bacteria

A major success is on the anvil for scientists at the University of London, which could mean an end to the problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Michael WilsoQ and his colleagues have been testing a number of light sensitive compounds that kill bacteria immediately when activated for a few seconds by low powered laser. Found successful in killing certain types of cancer cells, the technique caught the imagination of scientists and they worked on it to fight the bacterial resistance menace. The team found that the technique works in killing Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium that commonly infects wounds and burns.
