Clean Delhi

  • 30/01/2000

Notwithstanding protests from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that it encroached upon their jurisdiction, the Delhi government launched its "Clean Delhi' campaign in the Nirman Vihar colony in east Delhi on December 21. Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit had made no bones about her disapproval of the MCD's way of functioning. As a result, the urban development department of the government took up the project along with the All India Centre for Development of Environment Education, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The project envisages collection of domestic garbage from private residents with the help of the residents' welfare association, involving sweepers and ragpickers for the job and reusing or disposing of the wastes in an environment-friendly manner. Dikshit said cycle rickshaws, which are used for collection of garbage, will have two separate compartments
