Brazil launches carbon reporting programme
The Brazilian government has launched a Greenhouse Gas Proto-col Program, under which 12 major companies in the country have committed to publicly disclose their greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions.
The programme will serve as a voluntary registry similar to The Climate Registry in North America. Information reported by the participatory companies will be made available online.
Though Brazil, the world's fifth highest ghg emitter, is not obliged to reduce its emissions level under the Kyoto Protocol, the programme allows participatory companies to take action to reduce their ghg emissions. Under the plan, they will also receive training on international best practices in ghg accounting and management.
