Encroachments hinder revival of water bodies

Chennai THE biggest impediment in reviving the ooranies in the state seems to be encroachments, which have rendered the water bodies dry. At least 70 per cent of the 431 village ponds in Madurai district are rain fed and the rest are fed with water discharged from the Periyar for irrigation. Most of them have become useless, with indiscriminate encroachments.
