Fermilab s latest accelerator

The main injector at the Fermi National Accelerator in the US was commissioned in June 1999. With this, the particles (in this case protons and antiprotons) in the main accelerator of Fermilab will be accelerated in greater numbers to higher speeds. This increase in numbers is crucial because with the main injector to begin functioning in 2000, scientists will be able to get more data in one year than they have got in the previous decade. Scientists hope that they will be able to see some of the rare members of the particle zoo, like the elusive Higgs particle or the enigmatic supersymmetric particles. Even if they do not find these particles, they are confident of seeing enough interesting and novel phenomena to make the investment worthwhile.
