HONG KONG

HONG KONG A Hong Kong- based company finally got out of an unsavoury situation when the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) gave it permission to dump 43 million cartons of soured soy milk and fruit juices. The company, Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd, could not despatch these from its warehouses in early January after consumers found that a few soy-milk products had soured. The company and the EPD have been toying with various options like burning the paper-packed products in incinerators, burying them in landfills, or processing them in waste- water treatment plants, but all of them seemed impossible because of the enormous volume of liquid at hand. The 43 million cartons contain nearly 12.7 million litres of liquid. The company can now exercise all the three options within permissible limits. It might take the company until late April or early May to dispose off all the cartons.
