Cloned birthday

The livestock research centre at Oshimizumachi in Japan celebrated the birthday of two cloned female heifers. Noto and Kaga, the two heifers, now weigh more than 200 kg.

A year ago, with their premature birth, the world witnessed for the first time two cloned offsprings from the somatic cells of an adult cow.

The research centre now plans to artificially inseminate the heifers by the end of this year after they have gained another 100 kg. Researchers hope to see the birth of their calves in autumn 2000.
