LOOMING THREAT

There are at least 26 "potentially dangerous' glacial lakes in the Nepalese side of Himalayas, according to the Inventory of Glaciers. The risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood ( glof ) still poses a great threat for Nepal and the draining of excess water from the Tsho Rolpa glacial lake and bringing down its water level by three metres has not helped much, experts stated. They further stated that the lake water should be lowered by at least 10 metres in order to completely avert the risks of GLOF. The experts added that glaciers are melting or retreating at a faster rate than ever before due to the global climatic change. This has contributed to the formation of more glacial lakes and subsequent increase in their volumes.
