Sweden plans to cut GHG emissions by 30 per cent

Sweden plans to cut GHG emissions by 30 per cent Sweden recently announced an ambitious plan to check greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions in the country. It has targeted cutting down its ghg emissions to at least 30 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020. This is much higher than the European Union (eu) goal of a 20 per cent reduction in ghgs required by all its member nations.

Sweden had pushed hard for higher ghg reduction targets in the eu. "It would be impossible for us not to have the same ambitions at home,' said Andreas Carlgren, environment minister of Sweden. The government also planned to compensate for emissions caused by cabinet ministers' flights by buying emission rights, Carlgren added.

By 2005, Sweden had brought down its ghg emissions to 7 per cent below 1990 levels.Meanwhile, Norway, a non-eu member, has also announced that it will also reduce ghg emissions by 30 per cent by 2020.
