Clean Kolkata

euro II emission norms have been enforced in the Kolkata metropolitan area, which includes the Kolkata, Howrah and Chandernagore municipal corporations and 39 municipalities. K S Ramasubban, member secretary, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, (wbpcb), has confirmed that the board has issued a notice to implement Euro II norms for new vehicles being registered after December 31, 2000. "As the Supreme Court has made it mandatory for vehicles to conform to Euro II norms in Delhi, we took this decision to bring down pollution levels in West Bengal,' said Ramasubban. According to a study conducted by the wbpcb, vehicular traffic has been increasing at about 6.3 per cent annually in Kolkata. Traffic monitored in nine street crossings in the city revealed that 54 per cent of vehicles were more than 15 years old.
