Law versus environment

eighteen environmentalists have been arrested in Vancouver, Canada, for opposing the logging of some of the remaining pristine rainforest valleys in the Great Bear Rainforests. The uk is playing a major role in forest destruction as it continues to import timber and pulp from British Columbia's ancient temperate rainforests to make products like diy furniture and magazines.

Environmentalists say that the uk cannot ignore its role in the rainforest destruction, as it is the largest importer of timber from this region. The world's foremost experts in conservation biology told the Vancouver court that the current rate of clearcutting in Canada's temperate rainforest is irreparably damaging the diversity of the ecosystem. The scientist, Michael Soule in his testimony called for a moratorium of logging in remaining pristine valleys of ancient temperate rainforest. Soule said that the fragmentation of the rainforest caused by road building and clear-cut logging is damaging soil systems, destroying fish habitat and is likely to cause the regional extirpation of many species. The British Colombian government lists 743 plant and animal species as being endangered, or vulnerable to extinction.
