Novel bans
Italy is trying new ways to reduce air pollution. On January 16, 2005, car traffic was banned for several hours in many Italian cities. People used public transport, bicycles and even horses to commute during the ban period. Many preferred to walk.
Rome maintained a five-hour ban, starting at 10 am in the morning. In Milan, the ban was enforced from 9 am to midday and again from 3 pm to 6 pm. The two cities, however, exempted people going to watch soccer games from the ban. Brescia, Bergamo, Como and other small cities also followed the ban. Rome and Milan are considering another ban based on cars with even- or odd- numbered license plates.
