Top environment officials from China and the us will meet in Beijing to exchange ideas and discuss specific cooperation schemes. Carol Browner, administrator of the us Environmental Protection Agency ( epa ) visited Beijing recently.
Several letters of intent on Sino- us environment cooperation are expected to be signed. The scope of cooperation will cover control of sulphur dioxide pollution, air quality management and control of industrial pollution.
Browner will attend a workshop in Beijing on the disposal of sulphur dioxide. She will also inspect the control of water pollution in Taihu Lake in Jiangsu Province and visit Xi'an to observe implementation of Sino- us cooperation projects in the monitoring of urban air quality. "Browner's visit will give a substantial boost to Sino- us cooperation in environmental protection,' said Wang Zhijia, departmental director-in-charge of foreign affairs at the State Environmental Protection Administration ( sepa ). China and the us started to cooperate in environmental protection in 1980.
