ARGENTINA
Greenpeace and wind energy experts have said that concerted action by the governments could see close to a million megawatt of wind powered-systems installed worldwide within next 20 years. This will be enough for powering 500 million typical European households with renewable energy. They were presenting an international study at the global warming negotiations in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The study states that there are no technical constraints on expanding wind power from its present 0. 11 per cent to 10 per cent of total global energy supply in the next two decades. Moreover, wind power would reduce carbon emissions by 232 million tonnes annually by the year 2010.
The report emphasises that realising this goal requires political will, that is ensuring a fair market for the energy. According to the report, the us has the highest potential for wind energy. Currently, the US wind power produces less than one 'per cent of the us electricity. In contrast, Denmark is already approaching 10 per cent, says the report.
