Anti dam protest

in spite of protests by villagers of Pulichintala, the Andhra Pradesh government has proposed to construct a Rs 675-crore dam downstream of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project near the village in Guntur district.

Speaking to a news agency , Krishna Rao, superintendent engineer of the project said, "Around 16,000 people of Nemalipuri, Vellaturu, Adluru, Bintriyala, Reballi, Bhodana, Vemavaram and some other villages in Guntur and Nalgonda districts would get adequate compensation.' About 4,192 hectares (ha) of agricultural land in Nalgonda district and 2,921 ha in Guntur district will be submerged, once the dam is constructed.

According to official sources, the dam is expected to irrigate about 526,093.4 ha of land in the Krishna delta area. However, the Union ministry of environment and forests is yet to give its approval. This is expected only after the ministry hears the views of the local people that are likely to be affected by the water once the dam is constructed.
