Stakeholders meet
a medicinal plant stakeholders meeting was organised by Trade Record and Analysis of Flora and Fauna In Commerce ( traffic ) India, on 6-7 November, 2000. Trade-related issues of medicinal plants were discussed during the meeting. Speaking at the inauguration, Shailaja Chandra, secretary of the department of Indian systems of medicine, ministry of health, stated that there is a need to maintain quality in traditional medicines. "India is not considered a part of the annual us $60 billion global market of traditional medicines because the quality of Indian traditional medicines is suspect,' she stated. Rather than finding solutions to the problem, the traders blame each other for the sad state of quality control. "The industry suddenly gets an order for a particular product and then puts pressure on the trader to supply the raw material, whatever the state in which this material is. This often leads to adulteration,' informed Vikas Dhawan, a trader of medicinal herbs.
