Whales under threat
Environmental experts have criticised the US navy for its plant to use low frequency active (LFA) sonar widely used around the world. The navy's application is under the review of the US National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Experts say the sonar, emits low frequency sounds at high decibel levels to locate other ships, which could prove fatal to the whales of the area. The US navy says its testing has shown no evidence that the sonar is harmful to the whales. The environmental experts argue, Marsha Green of the Ocean Mammal Institute, USA, hired by the navy has claimed that the sonar was not tested to its highest level and was specially designed to test LPA sounds at levels that are not harmful
