Compensation demanded
several political parties have demanded that south Haryana should be declared "drought-hit' and have asked for adequate compensation to the affected farmers for the loss incurred due to water shortage. They have even threatened to intensify their agitation.
According to reports, standing crops in Rohtak, Sonepat, Rewari, Jhajjar, Gurgaon and Mahendragarh have been affected adversely due to inadequate monsoon rainfall. Besides a shortage of canal water for irrigation has compounded existing problems. Moreover, many farmers in this region grow water-intensive crops like sugarcane. They had increased the acreage anticipating good rainfall.
The Haryana Krishak Samaj, which has been looking after the interests of the farmers, has demanded a compensation package and withdrawal of diesel rates. The protesters claimed that the hike in diesel price had further hit the average farmer and most of them were poverty-stricken.
The members of the samaj led by its leaders staged a protest throughout the state few days back.
