Landslides pose threat to villages in Shimla district; govt studies rehabilitation

Villages in two panchayats of Rohru in Shimla district, which are endangered due to massive landslides during monsoon rains, are being studied by the state government to ensure rehabilitation of the villagers. The possibility of relocating these villages is also being worked out, according to a senior official of the administration. Uttarakhand and its bordering areas of Himachal had witnessed massive destruction due to heavy rains, resulting in cracks in the hills. Anti and Nandpur panchayats in the far east corner of the state in Rohru subdivision also witnessed landslides the last two weeks. With cracks developing in the land, many houses in four villages were damaged and a few old structures almost crumbled down and were declared unsafe for human habitation. At least a 18-kilometre stretch of the road leading to these panchayats was damaged at various places due to which trucks carrying nearly two lakhs apple boxes were stranded.
