Dispelling nuclear fears
vice-chancellor of Osmania Univer-sity, V Ramakistayya, underscored the need for bringing about awareness among the masses to dispel fears of tapping nuclear energy. Speaking recently at a seminar held at Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (ap), he said that a nuclear-awareness drive was the need of the hour. He pointed out that since India's future depended on energy drawn from nuclear resources, a better understanding of atomic energy and the various processes involved was crucial.
The government's plan to install a nuclear reactor in Nagarjunasagar, ap , generated significant protest from certain sections of the local population. Commenting on this, Ramakistayya said that the protest was basically due to certain misconceptions and lack of proper awareness among the masses. He said that this reactor would have proved immensely beneficial for power generation the state. He also called for collaborations between the universities and the industrial sector for facilitating research and development of nuclear energy resources. Other speakers at the seminar also highlighted the need for a nationwide drive to educate the Indian masses on the uses of nuclear power.
