Hot stuff
alternative energy sources - compressed natural gas, biomethanation technology, wind energy, solar thermal, ocean power, bio energy. Get ready for the catchwords of tomorrow. In a world struck by an impending energy crisis, it is time that India began pondering over the various options available through renewable and eco-friendly energy.
Even the kernel of the Earth offers a little-noticed energy potential in the form of heat. Geothermal energy is the heat energy from deep within the Earth. This heat reaches the surface through natural circulation of groundwater (The Ecological Asia , Vol 5, No 5).
Current technological development has now made it possible to "unearth" this hitherto-unknown source of power for various commercial purposes. World-wide utilisation of geothermal energy is growing rapidly, but India is yet to cover any ground. In India, there are more than 320 thermal springs with strong potential for geothermal energy development.
Many of these are located along the west coast, the Narmada rift and the Himalayan region. These springs are perennial and their surface temperatures range from 37
