Famine stares Africa in the face. And this time the situation is particularly bad because donor nations have severely slashed their aid programmes, says a special report prepared by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Thanks to a devastating drought, grain production in southern Africa had fallen by 1/3rd last year compared to the previous year's figures. Consequently, 23 million people in the African nations south of the Sahara do not have enough to eat today. Even in countries like Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, located in the horn of Africa - where harvest has been relatively satisfac- tory - people are likely to starve if additional stock is not brought in from outside. A vast section of the stricken population will die if the richer countries do not come to their aid, warns the FAO.
