Fish exhibition

Fish exhibition THE West Bengal government is planning to build a multi-layered underground aquarium and an exhibition centre at Victoria square. The project has already been cleared by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation and is awaiting final sanction.The construction will to start in December and is expected to be completed in two years.

The aquarium, which will be built under a pond, will hold aquatic flora and fauna at different levels and will go down spirally to a depth of 24 metres. According to the chief engineer, Manoj Majumdar, the aquarium will be constructed in such a way that visitors will be inside a glass case while the fish will swim outside. The construction was to start in 1993 but the plan got shelved after a non-governmental organisation moved court, protesting that the pond will get damaged.
