AIDS project

deputy chairperson of the planning commission K C Pant inaugurated the second phase of the National aids Control Project and urged all sections of society to address one of the biggest health challenges facing the country. As cases of aids infections in India are likely to increase threefold to 10 million by the next decade, there is an urgent need to integrate aids programmes with ongoing health programmes at district and state levels. This was essential to inculcate a sense of ownership among the states, he emphasised.

The Ninth Five Year Plan aims to increase awareness about hiv , improve hospital waste management to stop the pandemic from spreading and hopes to strengthen sentinel surveillances. Health Minister N T Shanmugam, asserted that the project primarily aims at educating the people on all aids- related issues while emphasising on safe sex. To tackle the spread of std s and reproductive tract infections, the project has devised a strategy to reach every household in the country and those diagnosed with an infection will be treated at the nearest healthcare facility.
