Conservation grant
THE World Bank has sanctioned a $11.54-million biodiversity and natural resource management programme in Turkey. The Global Environment Facility is contributing a $8.2 million equivalent grant while $3.35 million is coming from the Turkish government. The project will cover four selected biodiversity conservation sites in the country and will establish effective participatory planning and sustainable management.
The selected biodiversity conservation sites cover the Camili Forest District in the northern Black Sea province of Artvin, protected wetlands and steppe ecosystems of Sultansazligi-Erciyes in Central Turkey, forest and high alpine ecosystems of Koprulu Kanyon national park on the southern Taurus Mountains and aquatic and coastal ecosystems at Igneada, on the Black Sea Coast of Western Thrace.
The programme should help the country to develop the capacity to replicate such activities at other conservation sites in future.
