Down the drain

kolkata is heading for a serious water crunch. With spiralling population, the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (cmc) will have to supply 350 million gallons water a day by 2011. The cmc is supplying 250 million gallons water every day at present. The big question is: how will it fill the wide gap of 100 million gallons in 10 years?

The answer lies in checking the rampant water wastage. The cmc water department estimates that 75 million gallons of water is wasted every day during transmission stages. According to engineer-in-chief, cmc, Swadesh Bhattacharjee: "People often tamper with air valves to extract water from the pipes but use only some of it while the rest is wasted.'

Water mismanagement also occurs during transfer from the main pipes to primary and secondary ones. Apart from this, water is generously used in homes too.

Around Rs 3,37,838 is spent on water that goes waste eventually every day. And taking into account the cost incurred for water supply, every year water worth Rs 12.5 crore is wasted, according to an estimate of the water department of cmc.
