Sponge iron industry: the regulatory challenge

This new CSE report assesses regulatory status of the sponge iron industry in India and suggests a way forward for the sustainable growth of sponge iron industry in the years to come.

 

The report assesses the regulatory status of the sponge iron industry in India. Based on inspection information collected from various State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs), the report is a detailed account of the industry in four states - Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. The results are strikingly similar and point towards inadequate monitoring due to SPCB staff crunch, high emissions inspite of installation of pollution control equipment, failure of monitoring and compliance function of authorities, etc. It also suggests a way forward for the sustainable growth of sponge iron industry in the years to come.
