China goes in for eugenics

China goes in for eugenics China now wants to ensure birth of only healthy babies. It has adopted a law on Maternal and Infant Health Care, designed to "improve the quality of births". The law aims to upgrade maternity and child health facilities. It envisages pre-marital check-ups. If the results are unsatisfactory, the couple would have to postpone marriage or take long-lasting or permanent contraceptive measures. The check-ups are for 3 classes of diseases: serious hereditary diseases, legal contagious diseases like aids and relevant mental disorders. Even if the couples manage to pass these tests they will still be under "state-control". The act also includes foetal monitoring. If the foetus is found diseased, then abortion would be mandatory.
