The unwanted
the public hearing committee on environmental issues had to postpone its programme of collecting public opinion on the proposed barge-mounted power project at Tadari near Gokaran, Karnataka. Members of different fishermen's organisations and environmental groups who attended the meeting, said that the committee should make public the complete details of the project before seeking opinion of the people.
The locals protested against the hearing on proposed barge mounted power project with a capacity of 110 mw. The committee had no option but to postpone the hearing, as the locals and other activist were adamant that they will not allow the proceedings to continue.
It was argued that the project would affect the fishing activity in future. Whereas spilled fuel in the area would form a thin layer on sea water and pose serious problems to the marine life. It was also feared that the heat generated during power production would increase the temperature of the water and create "heat islands' in the sea. Many varieties of marine life may die of beach pollution.
