Trespassers moved: The glory of Dal lake is being revived. Thirteen hotels situated in the lake area are being shifted to Humhama near the Srinagar airport. The land to be allotted to hotel owners has been identified.
Tree slaughter: Over 850 huge and old trees along the 8-kilometer long stretch of Mandrem-Chopde road, in Pednem taluka, in Goa were felled in the last two months by contractors employed by the PWD in one of the largest slaughters of trees in the state.
No water for lawns and cars: The Haryana Municipal Corporation has banned the watering of lawns and washing cars during the morning supply hours. A special task force has been constituted to check misuse of water.
Bt Cotton under trial: The government has finalised eight locations in the north that would conduct trials of Bt cotton from the Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd (Mahyco). In the current Kharif season, Indian Coucil of Agricultural Research will carry out detailed open field evaluation trials under the All-India Coordinated Cotton Improvement Project (AICCIP).
Call for garbage: Panjim residents do not have to worry about trash now. They simply have to call 9822388889 for removal of any dump and the Panjim Municipal Corporation (PMC) will attend to the complaint with the help of the quick response vehicle which is meant to move around the city and collect garbage from overflowing bins.
Fish get breeding space: To conserve marine resources, the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have banned offshore fishing for 45 days from April 15, 2002.
This is meant to prevent sea vessels from disturbing the breeding season of prawn and fish.
Battery buses: The Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has been mandated by UNDP to take up research on fuel cell-powered buses for Delhi at a cost of around US $28 million.
POACHING RING BUSTED: Recently, the Chamoli police in Uttaranchal seized 17 musk pods and five bear gall bladders from a Tibetian refugee.
