Eco friendly economy

THE recently concluded International Conference on Civil Engineering for Sustainable Development, at the University of Roorkee in Uttar Pradesh, furs recommended developing the nation's economy in an eco-friendly manner. According to K G Ranga Raju, a professor at the university, risk assessment and disaster management should find a place in the overall planning of water resource projects.

Raju opined that intra-basin transfer of water in India over long distances, requires serious consideration in order to meet the rising demands. Besides, special attention is needed for ensuring consumable quality water for various needs, said Raju.

The participants suggested the immediate establishment of an underground space development authority for implementation of projects to be developed underground, and recommended the preparation of landslide zonation maps for the entire Himalayan region for laying safe roads and constructing safe human settlements.
