Killing for meat
poaching of bison, sambar and spotted deer in Nagarahole National Park, Mysore, has come to light following the arrest of two tribals. The racket has been busted close on the heels of the seizure of tiger skin and bones in the Park. The poaching operation had allegedly been masterminded by three Kodagu-based planters who also supplied the meat to selected outlets in Mysore and Gonikoppa. A senior forest officer claims that the three planters - Mudiyoda, Raju, Mudiyoda Arasu and Elavara Belli - are absconding after the arrest of the duo. Their arrest will provide more information about the racket, he says. The two tribals have reportedly admitted that during the last year alone, they killed seven bisons, four spotted deers and three sambars, besides other animals.However, specific details such as the exact number of animals, the varieties poached, and the hotels where the meat was supplied will be known only after the arrest of the planters, the official said.
