THREATENED FOREST

The Guwahati high court has asked the Assam government to take immediate steps to stop illegal felling of trees and begin afforestation. The order was given by a division bench while disposing a petition filed by wildlife activist Bibhav Kumar Talukdar. The bench also took note of the fact that while the international standards for minimum forest cover stood at 33.33 per cent the state only had 30.4 per cent forest cover. The high court directed the government to make up for the shortfall in the forest cover. The court has put it on record that the petitioner was not satisfied with the state government's efforts to protect the forest.
