Impacts of bioenergy on food security
FAO’s Bioenergy and Food Security Criteria and Indicators (BEFSCI) project has developed a set of indicators that be used to assess the impacts of bioenergy on food security at both national and levels. In addition, BEFSCI has identified range of possible responses to these impacts. Modern bioenergy development, through its environmental and socio-economic impacts, may have positive or negative effects on the four dimensions of food security: availability; access; utilization, and stability. In order to capture the complex relationship between bioenergy and food security and determine how the former affects the latter, assessments of the impacts of bioenergy on food security need to be carried out at both national and project levels, taking into account the international dimension as well. If negative impacts are identified through these assessments, appropriate responses should be implemented.
