Dam Damned
The Kerala High Court has issued notices to the Central government and the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu on a petition seeking a direction to the Union government not to increase the water storage level of the Mullaperiyar dam from 41 to 46 metres (m). Justice K A Abdul Gaffoor issued notices after hearing a petition filed by the Kerala Youth Front member, Sajan Kolath. The petitioner submitted that the dam built in 1886 has already completed its life span. The dam's maximum capacity to contain water is only 41 m. It would be highly dangerous to increase the water level, said Kolath quoting experts who had warned about the risk of increasing the water level.
