BENGAL "AZAAN" ISSUE

Twenty-eight imams of Calcutta recently refused to appear before the high court for the third consecutive time in the case against use of microphones during the call for prayers. The issue is already snowballing into a big controversy. Justice B P Banerjee of the Calcutta high court, said, "Some political parties are misconstruing the ban on microphones as a ban on azaans." He has been trying to implement the Central Pollution Control Board's guidelines regarding noise pollution which state that sound pollution above 65 decibels be banned. Justice Banerjee said that some political parties were exploiting this ban on noise pollution as means to gain political mileage.
