The Peruvian government has decided to allow the residents of Tambogrande town to take the final decision about allowing a Canadian company to mine in their area. Manhattan Minerals Corporation, the company, has been granted permission to mine large copper deposit of the town. But residents fear that the mining activities will contaminate agricultural land. "The project would first have to pass environmental studies and would then be placed before local residents for approval,' assured Carlos Herrera, the country's energy and mines minister. Officials of Manhattan claim that the environmental impact of the project would be insignificant, as it involves neither a refinery nor a smelter.
