Meatier mushroom
A new variety of edible mushroom, Pleurotus djamor beodijin , has been raised from the waste of an oil palm bunch using polybags and paddystraws as its substrate. Experiments conducted in Quilon, Kerala, yielded 408 gm of mushrooms per bed of 500 gm of the substrate. The yield is 22.5 per cent more than that of the Pleurotus citrinopileatus co1 mushroom. Compared to this, the new species produces large sporophores which appear four days earlier. The new mushrooms are more fleshy with high protein value of 30 per cent and less fat of two per cent.
