SAVE THIS HILL

A proposal to build a hill station by the Sahara India Housing Ltd (SIHL) near Lonavala in Pune district in Maharashtra, has been stayed by the Mumbai High Court. The court stopped SIHL from continuing with any work on the project and adjourned the matter for admission to July 8. The orders were passed on a writ petition filed by various local NGOs and residents. They appealed that the state government's resolution of November 11, 1996, allowing the development of hill stations and resorts, should be nullified. They argued that the state government had given itself absolute powers to declare any region in Maharashtra as a hill station and give it the status of an industry which will unleash destruction of forests and have adverse effect on ecology. They said that the resolution violates statutory provisions.
